EZee Fashion - Zaha Hadid for United Nude - Nova Shoes

I'm dying to share this with you.

The collaboration between the United Nude founder, Rem D Koolhaas and the renowned architect Zaha Hadid resulted in the most innovative and exquisite pair of shoes I've seen. The limited edition haute couture shoe ($2000 US) was launched at the iconic store L’eclaireur, in summer 2013.

"Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world." - Marilyn Monroe

Zaha Hadid was born in Baghdad, Iraq. She studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut before moving to London to attend the Architectural Association (AA) School where she was awarded the Diploma Prize. Hadid was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize (considered to be the nobel Prize of architecture) in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work.

Hadid was born in Iraq in 1950, a time when Modernism stood for glamour and progressive thinking in the Middle East. She found her calling in life when she was just 11, delighting her parents by designing her own bedroom. "I experimented with new shapes in my early works after researching new engineering concepts to understand all possible scenarios that a building could cope with," says Hadid.

Her early style was all about fragmentation, with straight lines and folds, posing a major challenge to the design's translation into reality. A style that will later evolve into a completely different one. Her later works put more emphasis on curves to capture a building's fluidity and its integration into its natural surroundings.

"Many people say my works are too complicated. But it is similar to nature which is also complex," Hadid says. "But there is also order and organization in nature, just like in my works."

Hadid was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2002 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to architecture.

It's very difficult to single out one of Zaha's extraordinary architectural or interior designs, all are beautiful in structure and composition. Her futuristic style has spawned many copycats. But what blew my mind away are her fashion collaborations. Who would think that Karl Lagerfeld would commission Hadid to design the catwalk with a nautical concept and transform the Grand Palais for his S/S 2012 Chanel runway show?

It was just natural that the Creative Designer of United Nude, Rem d Koolhaas (architect himself) would go into a collaboration with Zaha Hadid to create the limited edition Nova couture shoes.

United Nude was launched in 2003, together with seventh generation shoemaker Galahad Clark. Ever since, United Nude has become the iconic brand at the intersection of fashion and design, creating products that are about clear concepts, elegance and innovation. They have seven flagship stores in Amsterdam, London, New York, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Seoul and Tokyo, although the brand is available in over 50 countries worldwide.

The Nova shoe claims to be the first ever shoe to use rotation moulding in its manufacture. The shoe also employs injection moulding and vacuum casting. The footwear features a striated surface resembling geological formations similar to those used in Hadid's architectural projects such as the Galaxy Soho development in Beijing. The metallic chromed vinyl rubber upper is lined with leather while the platform and heel are fiberglass and the outsole is rubber.

Here's some text from United Nude:

Zaha Hadid and United nude’s Creative director Rem D Koolhaas have been talking about shoes since they first met years ago. Hadid, an architect with a passion for shoes, and Rem D, the original shoe architect, agreed to collaborate on the design of a shoe with no pre-conceptions and ignore all the rules to create an entirely new form of shoe.

“Zaha consistently reinvents the program with her own ideas and interpretations. Her visionary creations are often unexpected, yet reinforce their origins,” says Koolhaas. “I could not resist the challenge to work with Zaha. We gave ourselves the greatest degree of experimentation and used the latest digital design and manufacturing technologies to create one of the most innovative shoes ever produced.”

The result is quintessentially Hadid. the revolutionary design of the NOVA shoe combines innovative materialization and ergonomic considerations with the dynamism of Hadid’s unmistakable architectural language to convey an inherent sense of movement; revealing the experimentation and invention of Hadid’s process through every stage of design and construction.

“United Nude’s collections are provocative yet sensual. Rem D Koolhaas’ unrelenting experimentation at the cutting edge of fashion never fails to capture our imagination.” explains Hadid. “I have always appreciated those who dare to experiment with materials and proportions. Our collaboration with United Nude reinterprets the classic shoe typology; pushing the boundaries of what is possible without compromising integrity.”

Guided by her 30 years of experience working with complex structural principles on all scale levels, Hadid has developed an innovative cantilevered system that allows the staggering 16cm (6.25 in) heel to appear completely unsupported.

The rhythmic, articulated transformation of the shoe’s composition encapsulates the seamless integration of materials, inventive engineering and highest standards of comfort. As Hadid’s most recent expression of this symbiotic association, the NOVA shoe design transcends the disciplines of fashion and architecture.
